It was a lovely weekend of food and conversation, as we had a number of the volunteers (and some volunteered) from Odyssey 2010 over for a BBQ. The weather held out nicely and [info]gaspodex didn't catch fire, so all was well :)

We'll hold another one towards the end of summer, so if you were unable to attend this time you'll get another chance to eat drink and relax with the rest of the team of Odyssey 2010 volunteers, We managed to do some very useful brainstorming and I'll be posting up some of our collective thoughts on the forum for open discussion later this week.

If you would like to join the team of Odyssey 2010 volunteers, please log onto the Odyssey 2010 forum and let us know what area you are interested in helping us out with.

The presents are finally all wrapped and after two(!) last-minute trips to Tesco's, the fridge, freezer and store cupboards are all full to bursting. Sadly we've had to excuse ourselves from [info]bopeepsheep's party tonight as we're both still feeling more than a bit below par and exhausted - particularly poor [info]gaspodex :(

We didn't make it to [info]sirmaldaef's party on Friday either for much the same reason; the Gaspodes are a bit sickly at the moment!

In other news, I fell a bit behind on my advent calendar due to being ill and have just eaten the chocolate for days 3 through to 24 in one fell swoop. Not to be recommended; I'm now feeling a little nauseous :)

We currently have one pair of high heeled shoes, one silver watch and a dressing gown left by various visitors this month, I know who has left what, but would anyone care to take a guess at the owners?

I'm all for preserving historical and interesting material for future generations to enjoy, but really... this needs a blackboard cleaner more than anything else!

I've finally finished re-reading this series and still cannot decide on the following:

Was Victor the original host for Fury?  If he was, my guess is that the Fury personality jumped into Denis when he was "Wide Open" at the last Good Friday metaconcert prayer for Victor.  This sort of explains why Victor's non operant siblings died when he did, if they were the original (and inferior) Hydra.

Was Victor the first Hydra?  This makes more sense to me than Victor being Fury, as it was Victor that killed and fed on Kieran and Shannon and this must have been as Hydra rather than Fury as we know from later on in the story that Fury has to be shown how to feed by the last remaining Hydra (Madeline).

Also, I'm still confused about *what* Fury is.  From Jack's birth experience, my guess is that Fury is Denis/Victor's "low self" that separated from his "high self" after the trauma of abuse from his father.  There is also a hint of a similar "self" divide with Marc, where his twin was the "high self" that was killed by the ruthless "low self" that was Marc.  Maybe the lack of a whole self explains Marc's "inhuman" mannerisms.

Arrgh!  I demand an explanation from the Author herself :)

Meanwhile, I'm still re-reading the Saga of the Exiles and have only got as far as the second book so far.  I started reading this series at the same time as the Galactic Milieu books, figuring I could read forwards in time on my train journeys to and from work and backwards in time at night time before going to sleep.  This had the advantage of me never forgetting my book, as one book was permanently in my bag and the other permanently at my bedside.  The only disadvantage was that I had assigned a lot more time to the forward books as 10 minutes reading before bedtime didn't really allow me to make much of a dent in the backward series.  Oh well, the series has now been upgraded to Bag status and I'll have to find another book for the bedside.

Just got back from Cult TV - now all tired/happy/sad.  The atmosphere was buzzing, the guests were fabulous and everything went smoothly - even the weather!

This year the event was held at Jurassic Heythrop Park, a large country house type hotel.  After receiving a tip off from [info]emmzzithat TomTom's navigational sensors were a bit off, we found the place easily enough and started up the 2 mile driveway that was very reminiscent of Jurassic Park.  There was a junction box with a red light on on it lurking amongst the shrubbery and we both craned our necks looking for the brontosauruses when we drove past a clearing.  A rustling in the undergrowth made us both jump, but it was just a squirrel :)

The hotel was generally very pleasant, although like most older hotels of this type it did suffer a little from Scenery Syndrome, thinking that a fantastic view compensates for lack of little luxuries that are now commonplace in modern hotels; selection of toiletries, more than 2 pillows, 2 towels per person - that sort of thing.  Our room was squeaky clean and the staff were all very pleasant, if a little inefficient regarding the bar.  The main soundstage was a triumph of technology and worked very well.  The workshop space was huge and there were plenty of smaller rooms that were put to good use by the organisers.

As always, I didn't manage to get to nearly enough panels and talks, but those ones I did attend were very good indeed!  The guests were marvelous and I was so pleased  I got to see  Matthew Graham and Philip Glenister, who were a riot :)  The auction did very well too, with a signed copy of the shooting script for the last episode of the Life on Mars going for over £400.  As all profits go to charity, this was all good!

I went to the last After Dark discussion, where Alex gave what I thought was a very balanced and honest account of each year of Cult TV.  It was so well attended that we had to relocate to a much larger area.

The whole con had a wonderful sparkle to it that had been lost in the shadow of the bitter split in 2004 until now - but it was back with avengence and helped the event go out on a real high!

Leave-taking was a poignant affair; with not a dry eye in the house :(  I do understand Alex's reasons for stopping this marvelous event, but I also hold out hope that we can convince him to revive it one day; it ain't dead yet, it's just resting :)

Ooh!! Forgot to say - I won the quizz - with my team beating first [info]gaspodex's team, then everyone else that got in our way :)
